Eesti Energia’s Jordan project wins the Asian innovation award
The power plant to be built in Jordan based on Estonian oil shale technology award won in the category of innovation at the Asian Power Awards 2017 energetics awards.
According to Margus Vals, Board Member of Eesti Energia, the award presented to the Jordan power plant is significant recognition of the work done by the Estonian engineers.

The Asian Power Awards energetics awards was taking place for the 13th time and is considered the most prestigious in the region. Its aim is to recognise the most prominent initiatives in the energetics sector. The Jordan project was submitted to the competition in its own category in connection with the participation of the Malaysian enterprise YTL Power International Berhad.
The investment of 2.1 billion US dollars in the oil shale power plant and cast mine is the biggest foreign investment in Jordan ever and the biggest ever one-time investment into oil shale energetics. The power plant is based on local fuel and significantly enhances the energy security of Jordan, as it is currently over 95 per cent dependent on imported energy.
The oil shale power plant of 554 MW capacity will be located in Attarat Um Ghudran, Central Jordan. The oil shale cast mine of 10 MT annual capacity and its infrastructure will accompany the oil shale power plant. YTL Power International Berhad and the Chinese enterprise Yudean Group each own an equal share of 45% of the project, while Eesti Energia owns 10 per cent of shares. The power plant will be built by the major Chinese corporation Guangdong Power Corporation. The project realisation is being financed by a loan agreement of 1.6 billion USD by some of the world’s biggest banks in China.
The power plant will be completed and will start operating in 2020.
